Course I

Foundations of Health and the Origins of Herbal Medicine

February 26, 2020

We will explore the concepts that explain how our bodies function optimally; that we are capable of much more than just avoiding disease and recovering from illness. We have a great capacity for regeneration which makes possible a fully balanced and energized state of being - all the time. Human beings are designed to heal from within and we have co-evolved with the plants that naturally support this process.

Herbal medicine grew out of human beings’ need to restore health during illness, to sustain life, and to have the strength and endurance to exceed basic survival allowing us to apply our higher selves and life’s purpose in a sustainable manner. We will look at traditional health systems and how herbs are inter-worven into the fabric of these cultures. Then we ask ourselves, what is our own herb culture?

Course II

Body Systems and Herbal Therapeutics

March 25, 2020

The mechanics of the human body are simply unbelievable. Imagine all the processes occurring simultaneously to operate millions of tiny cells that form tissues which in turn form our organs. It is a synchronized feat of nature, and it is beautiful. We will look at the human body through the lens of anatomy and physiology and pair that with how plant extracts interact with our body systems. If we are looking to get a desired effect from a plant, how does it work in the body? You will learn plant actions and constituents, herbal energetics, doctrine of signatures, and create your own intimate connection with the power of plants.

Botany, Plant Constituents and Extraction Methods

April 29, 2020

Plants have their own anatomy and physiology that create natural chemicals; these are the constituents we are looking to use in plant medicine. Having a basic understanding of plant properties, with a little chemistry theory thrown in, will give you the road map for how to extract the herb and what medium works best. This class is all about playing in the kitchen and we will show you how to conduct your own herb lab, basic tools needed, and methods to use.

Growing Herbal Medicine in the Greenhouse and Field

May 13, 2020

It all starts with a seed! This is a hands on day where you will learn how to germinate herbs from seed, tend to the seedlings, and understand the conditions they need to survive in the ground or when potted up. We will go through the process of creating a propoagation plan and you will receive a framework for how to think about growing your herbs in various conditions whether it’s a balcony garden, a little plot, or scaling up for farming.

Field Harvest and Making Plant Medicine

July 29, 2020

We will set out in the morning with our boots and harvest buckets to collect herbs from the field and prepare them to make various forms of herbal medicine. Timed for the beginning of peak season and herbal abundance, it’s when we get busy preserving to have our medicines year round. We will work with how to build an herbal formula, blending for flavor, and how to do the calculations so you can repeat your favorite recipe. This is the final step toward forming your own herbal tradition!

Taking Courses II & III is recommended but not required.
